Notification delivery setup in Custory happens per workspace and per person. That distinction matters:
  • Workspace integrations connect shared systems like Slack or Discord
  • Personal linking connects your individual Slack or Discord identity for direct messages

Where to configure notification delivery

Open Settings -> Notifications while inside the workspace you want to configure. Notification delivery is workspace-specific, not a single global preference across every workspace.

Notification groups

Custory currently lets you choose channels per notification group:
  • Mentions
  • Item updates
  • System
Each group can route to one or more of:
  • In-app
  • Email
  • Slack DM
  • Discord DM

Email notifications

Email delivery goes to your Custory account email. Email setup is the simplest delivery option because it does not require an extra personal link step. Use email when:
  • You want durable catch-up
  • The update matters, but does not require an instant response
  • You want a second channel for system alerts

Slack DM setup

Slack direct-message delivery requires two things:
  1. An active Slack workspace integration for the current workspace
  2. Your Slack account linked to your Custory account
If the workspace Slack integration is not active, Slack DM delivery will not be available operationally.

How Slack linking works

From Settings -> Notifications:
  1. Generate a Slack link code
  2. Open the Custory app in Slack
  3. Send the generated code, or link CODE, in the Messages tab
The code is short-lived and one-time use.

Discord DM setup

Discord direct-message delivery also requires two things:
  1. An active Discord workspace integration
  2. Your Discord identity linked to your Custory account

How Discord linking works

From Settings -> Notifications:
  1. Generate a Discord link code
  2. Open a DM with the Custory bot in Discord
  3. Run /link CODE
As with Slack, the code is short-lived and one-time use. Custory link codes are intentionally temporary. Current behavior:
  • Codes expire after 15 minutes
  • A code can only be used once
  • You can regenerate a code
  • You can clear an unused code
  • You can unlink an already linked Slack or Discord account
This gives the team a lightweight but controlled way to connect personal chat identities.

What the settings page shows

For Slack and Discord account linking, Custory can show:
  • Whether the workspace has an active integration
  • Whether your personal account is linked
  • Your linked external display name where available
  • The active link code, if one exists
This is useful when troubleshooting why DM delivery is or is not available.

Channel availability logic

Slack DM and Discord DM are not just preference toggles. They depend on setup state. For each person:
  • If the workspace integration is missing, the channel is not operational
  • If the workspace integration exists but the personal link is missing, the channel still is not ready
  • Once both are present, the DM channel becomes a real delivery target

Founder or product owner

Good default:
  • Mentions: in-app + Slack or Discord DM
  • Item updates: in-app
  • System: in-app + email

Support or ops owner

Good default:
  • Mentions: in-app + Slack or Discord DM
  • Item updates: in-app + optional email
  • System: in-app + Slack or Discord DM + email

Wider team members

Good default:
  • Mentions: in-app
  • Item updates: in-app
  • System: in-app
Then add direct-message delivery only where the person is expected to respond quickly.

Regenerate code

Use this when the previous code expired or was copied incorrectly.

Clear code

Use this when you created a code but no longer want that pending link flow active. Use this when:
  • You linked the wrong Slack or Discord account
  • You changed identity or server access
  • You want to stop DM delivery to that account

Common mistakes

Enabling Slack DM before personal linking is complete

The preference may exist, but the delivery path is not ready until the account is linked. It does not. Shared integration and personal linking are separate layers on purpose.

Sending every notification group to direct messages

DM delivery should be reserved for the updates someone truly needs to notice quickly.
